Mental Health has been given the ugly term PTSD – this is a newer exploration in addressing old and current issues not only with our Veterans but everyone who serves our community. The service industry – defined by those who serve; specifically Veterans, Law Enforcement Officers, Correctional Officers, Fire Fighters, First Responders, and Dispatchers face events contributing to lifelong mental health issues. These unfortunate events create a deeply rooted bond and trust. IGY6, or I Got Your 6, is a promise to be your brothers or sisters keeper. To act beyond our own selfish wishes and desires, to get in the “trenches” with those in need and help them find a better path. What is 22? According to the VA’s report “Suicide Data Report, 2012 – Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services Suicide Prevention Program”, 22 veterans a day commit suicide.
IGY622 was born from the unfortunate reality of a veteran that was fortunately stopped in route to take his life. Luckily this attempt was thwarted, but this is not the story with a happy ending. The hard work and the lifelong struggle begins. Mental resiliency is the ability to stand strong in the face of stress, strain, struggle, and constant negative pressures. Sadly, we all face times of weakness, isolation, and become vulnerable enough to start “circling the drain”.
There are many great non-profits that offer some amazing one time programs. But there is a huge gap, in the very fundamental basis on which those who serve operate. We are our brothers and sisters keepers. We function as a team, or else we fail as a team; only to face our mental health alone. After the fortunately unfortunate tale of our one of our brothers, IGY622 was born. We actively seek and find those in need and bring them into the community so they don’t fight their own demons alone. Through collaborative programs such as our service dog program, lifelong tools and training are offered to help ensure a brighter future. A future filled with the ability to go out in public, take the children to sporting events and spend time with the family. Something long lost and forgotten to those who struggle with PTSD. We do this as a community strengthened through a bond thicker than words and born through battles untold.
